Padstow Harbour, Cornwall, England

Padstow is a great place to stay with access to some of the finest beaches in Cornwall and with some really good restaurants.

We like to find a good Bed & Breakfast (with parking which is like gold dust in Padstow) and within a reasonable walk of the town centre. This time we found a cracker where all the bedrooms were suites with a lounge/dining area.

Breakfast was served in our room so it all added up to a really lazy stay – and the food was the best I’ve had in a B&B – great selection and top quality. Check out Althea House – you will not be disappointed – the owners Neil & Emma Beare really look after you.

Padstow is home to the well known Rick Stein empire (or Padstein as its known locally) which has two restaurants, two (or is it 3) hotels, a deli, a gift shop, a cook school and oh yes a Fish & Chip shop.

My advice is skip the famous Seafood Restaurant which was out of this world when I first visited 15 years ago but based on my last visit, it is I think, over priced and to be honest a bit ‘eat it and beat it!’

If you want to try one of Rick’s places go for the Rick Stein Cafe – good food and good value, or his  Cornish Arms pub at St Merryn where we had a really great lunch on the outdoor terrace.

Shopping Padstow, Cornwall, England

Best restaurant in our book in Padstow is Paul Ainsworth at Number 6 Restaurant where the food is really good, lovely atmosphere, friendly attentive staff and really good value for money.

You’ll find it (pictured left) right next door to Rick Stein’s Cafe.

For that ultimate touch visit the wine shop – Bin2 - just off the harbour where you get a selection of excellent wines and can sit on their little terrace and enjoy a bottle for just £5 corkage – add in the snack menu and you’ve found a great way to spend an hour on a sunny afternoon!

Dunure Castle, Ayrshire, Scotland

Sometimes the places closest to home are the easiest to overlook. We live in a beautiful part of Scotland – on the west coast with loads of beaches, golf courses and places to visit.

Dunure is a small village just a few miles from Ayr with a lovely little harbour and a ruined castle. Great for an afternoon’s escape and a picnic.

If you plan on touring this part of the coast there’s plenty to see and some great places to stay. The famous Turnberry Hotel and Golf Course and Culzean Castle are just a few miles away.
